Abigail was surprised that sleep came so readily to her, given the turmoil of the night. Perhaps there were remnants of the poppy that had been used to drug her still within. Whatever the cause, she fell asleep within minutes and was not aware that Montgomery Reid, after studying her features as she slept, had left the room. When she opened her eyes, sunlight was entering the windows and the room was bright. There was a severe-looking woman of middle age standing at her bedside. Abigail thought she had been in the room the night before, but she couldn’t be certain.
“There you are now,” the woman said in a voice which was firm but not unkind. “I wondered when you’d waken, not that I blame you for sleeping as long as you could. Mr Reid has explained to me what happened to you. ‘Tis a vile, sinful world and no mistake, to exploit an innocent girl such as yourself. But you are safe here, have no fear. Mr Reid is a good man, albeit a worldly one. He’ll be in to see you later in the day, but his instructions were very clear. I’m to see that you get a nice warm bath and you get into some presentable clothing, and then back to bed you go.”
Clothing.
Abigail recalled what she was wearing and her face reddened. Mrs Nolan, who had been scandalised by the garment, pretended not to notice. “You’re a mite taller than Miss Nancy, but in a nightgown, ‘tis no matter and we’ll decide how to dress you when Mr Reid says you’re able to be up. In the meantime, don’t you worry about a thing. You’re in good hands now and we’ll take care of you.”
Abigail, still weary despite her sleep, managed to thank Mrs Nolan, even though her eyes were beginning to fall shut. Mrs Nolan busily filled a tub with steaming hot water that the servants brought up and when it was filled, she helped Abigail out of bed.
“Now, you just sit in that nice water and enjoy it,” she instructed. “I’ll dispose of these,” she said, pulling the discarded garments together into an untidy heap that left no doubt as to what she thought of them, “and bring you something a good, decent woman could wear with no shame.”
Abigail nodded. The water was just the right temperature, hot but not scalding, and soothing. She leaned back against the tub and closed her eyes. She had forgotten that there were comforts like this. Her captivity at the Blight brothel had driven away thoughts of anything but fear and dread.
She let out the breath she hadn’t even known she had been holding for three months.
It was finally over. She was safe. Her prayers had been answer and Mr Reid had been sent to deliver her.
At least, she thought she was delivered?
Mr Reid had been intent on seduction when he stumbled into that bedroom. Initially he had assumed that she was there for the purposes of his pleasure.
